The Best Times of My Life

The Best Times of My Life

Ryan got A TON of gifts at his birthday party, but there was one gift in particular that I was delighted to see when he opened it.

Small Pig. My mom got him Small Pig, a book that she read to me and my three brothers all the time when we were kids. After the party was over, Ryan actually took Small Pig out of the stack of new books he got and wanted me to read it to him. Sitting there reading it, I actually teared up. I couldn’t believe I was sitting there reading Small Pig with my son! I remembered reading it with myΒ mom and sitting the same exact way. I even remembered all of the thoughts that went through my mind as we read it together. Then, it was like all of the my best memories from my childhood were flooding through my mind and I couldn’t help but get choked up. Those were such easy, innocent, wonderful times. The best times of my life.

There are a few memories that I keep near and dear to my heart. One of them being Waffle House.

waffle house

If you are from the south you know that Waffle House is known for it’s less than stellar service, and is to most the place where you go after a night of drinking because it is open 24 hours a day. Although it has been this for me too on occasion, I love my memories of going there with mom after every doctor’s appointment I had as a kid. My dad would also take me there late at night sometimes. Just me and him! I would always get cheese eggs, raisin toast, and grits. I still get that. πŸ™‚

Then there is grumpy bear…… which I still have.

My dad used to take me to garage sales on Saturday mornings and one time I came home with grumpy bear. He is a normal teddy bear but for some reason has this grumpy look on his face. My dad would play with me taking grumpy bear and kind of using him as a puppet, gave him this personality similar to Oscar the Grouch. I thought it was hilarious. Now grumpy stays at the top of my closet because as you can see, Cody has a great interest in him.

I LOVE remembering these times because they truly were the best. My teens and 20’s were pure crap. I think I am the only person in the world that was ecstatic to turn 30. I could finally leave those decades in the dust and start new!

And I did.

These are now the best times of my life…..

What memories are your favorite?

Do you still have something from your childhood that you can’t bring yourself get rid of?

Have a wonderful day everyone!

  1. Oh, this is so sweet, it’s what life is all about! My favorite memories are of my grandparents. My mom was a young single working mom and I had an old set of grandparents that I was with all the time. Their wisdom from a bygone era always fascinated me and I loved to just sit and ask questions and listen. Rocking on the porch under a shade tree with my grandpa and going to the family farms and picking raspberries and Lima beans with my grandma are among my favorites. Also joining my grandpa in his workshop, he was an amazing woodworker, and baking with my grandma are dear to my heart. I can still see the countertop with her hands covered in flour and I have my grandpas denim work apron and tape measure. Thankfully I was named after my grandma, I am honored to have her name, and I can honestly say that she was the best friend I have ever had. I just wish I had more time, I miss them terribly. I try to raise my son as I think they would want him to be. This just brought me back to such a happy place, thank you for this post!

I have a few items I can’t get rid of. A knit poncho from my great aunt that I carried like a blankie, a little stuffed bear I “stole” from nursery school, and a handmade Raggedy Anne my mom bought me in New England. They are carefully packed away!

      1. Thank you!! We just got home from the store, we bought him a fish! He is so excited, he keeps talking to it and he says we rescued the fish and gave him a new home, so sweet! I figured a pet in his room may help him sleep. Now he sleeps with us but he swears he will sleep in his new room, lol!

Crazy busy getting ready, tomorrow is room makeover day. I’m also going clean and start cooking. I am looking forward to it all though, I have fun entertaining. Thank you for always thinking of me!!

  2. Beautiful post πŸ™‚ my favourite memories are summers spent with my grandparents. My grandfather recently passed away and I find myself remembering those fond memories more often lately.

My mom has kept a bin worth of stuff from when I was a kid, including some of my favourite stuffed animals. I recently went through it and definitely got a bit choked up about it!

    1. Thank you!
Yes! It’s crazy how much emotion a bunch of cotton covered with fur can unleash lol! It’s nice taking trips down memory lane now and then. πŸ™‚
I’m so sorry for the loss of your grandfather. That’s wonderful that you have such great memories with him.

  3. Oh m gosh! I loved Care Bears as a kid and my son just asked me for a green one! Just like you passing on your book, so cool!!

  4. Ok, so that pic makes me think SheHulk has some good upper arm development.
Funny how dogs can get jealous. There was a stuffed snow leopard on the dash of my wife’s truck, which my last dog would gently remove every time he was in the truck alone.
Teaching Ryan to read will be the investment that pays off the most😊
    Have a Rockin’ dayπŸ˜ƒ

    1. Thanks! πŸ™‚
Haha! Dogs are so funny. Whenever I find Cody with something he’s not supposed to have, he stands super still and looks to the side like “if I stand still enough, I become invisible. ”
      Have a good one!
