When In Doubt….

Hey Yall!

One thing is for sure when it comes to healthy eating…… there are a BUNCH of ways to go about it.

What makes things so confusing it that we are constantly learning more and more things about nutrition. This is great! We are so blessed to live in a time where we have so much information at our fingertips! But it can also be overwhelming and confusing.

This sound familiar?

“I’m so excited to get healthy! Let’s do this! So, I need to eat my fruits and vegetables. I can do that! Oh wait, only organic ones. No problem. Oh only fruits and vegetables? Oh ok, some dairy too. No, no dairy. Gotcha….I think. Meat is good. Ok I’ll add some steak! Oh only grass fed. Oh wait, no meat except for once a month. I think I got it now. No? Only meat every day of the month? Uh, I think I can do that. As long as I drink it with diet soda. Got it. Ok. What do you mean that will kill me? My head is starting to spin. Eat what I want but keep my carbs low. I think I got it…..sorta. Oh, eat what I want as long as it is a carb? Are you sure? Don’t eat anything at all until next Tuesday. Coconut oil what?………….. I give up. ”

We have to remember that when we are in doubt, we need to just go back to basics. Go with what we know. My very favorite quote puts things into perspective.

“Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” -Theodore Roosevelt

That’s the only way to keep moving forward through overwhelm! We go with what we know, and do out very best with it!

Think of the things that you know have contributed to a better you in the past and start with that. Make a plan that you are pretty confident you can stick to with a little effort. Did you learn something new lately that you want to try? Add that one thing to your plan! But no matter if you are starting from scratch, starting over, or just trying something new, it is crucial to have a plan. You wouldn’t go to a new place without directions right? You need a plan to ensure your success.

For example, I am trying out the DASH Diet for the month of July. To make sure that I stick to the plan every day, I have been planning my meals for the next day the night before. I won’t always have to do this, but here in the beginning, it sets me up for success.

The key to getting healthy and losing weight isn’t as much about eating an absolutely perfect diet as it is about doing what you can, with what you have, where you are consistently.

Having a plan that you can consistently stick to will win you the race every time!

Do you have a goal that you would like to achieve?

Do you have an idea of a healthy plan that you could be consistent with?

Maybe set a goal and make a plan tonight!

    1. Hi Monk!
Are you having trouble figuring out where to start with an eating plan?
If so, there are many ways to do it but here is one easy way to get you going.
For breakfast, lunch, and dinner have a portion the size of your palm of a lean protein and then a portion the size of you palm of a carb like oatmeal, rice, or potato.
At one or two of the meals, have a serving of healthy fat like nuts, seeds, egg yolks, or extra virgin olive oil.Have as much non starchy produce as you want with every meal. So an example of a day of eating would look like this…
Breakfast- 4 egg whites, 1/2 cup oatmeal with blueberries and cinnamon.
Snack- apple, 1/2 cup Greek yogurt
Lunch- 4 oz chicken (Or however big your palm is), 1/2 cup cooked rice, broccoli with 1 tbs extra virgin olive oil
      Snack- carrots, 2 tbs hummus
Dinner- 4 oz steak (or palm) veggies, medium baked potato the size of your palm with 1 tbs butter
Snack- apple, 1 hard boiled egg

Just one way you could do it but there’s an idea if you were looking for one. πŸ™‚

  1. Love the quote! It can be overwhelming trying to keep up with all the different diets and food trends. I was out with friends and it seemed like everyone had something they couldn’t eat because they were all on some kind of diet, it felt a little crazy, lol πŸ™‚
This post came at the perfect time for me because I woke up this morning knowing I needed to do something to get back on track with eating better. My plan is to go back to basics, less processed more whole foods, and keeping track of what I eat during the day.

    1. Yes! Exactly! It gets crazy! You have to tune it all out sometimes, especially if you are trying to meet a goal.
That’s a great plan Daisy. Keeping track is so important! The last few months I have just been trying to stay healthy but eating however much I want really. It’s so easy to eat too much that way 😦 Oh well, it was nice to let go a little bit. But now I’m getting back to basics like you!
I’m so glad you liked the post! That always makes me feel so good when I hear it came at the right time for someone. πŸ™‚
Have a great day and good luck Daisy! Keep me posted!

  2. Love your post, there is so much controversial information out there, it is so overwhelming. I really like the idea of getting back to basics, which I have been doing and it feels really good. Eating whole, unprocessed food like our grandparents/great-grandparents did, it wasn’t that long ago. I have been trying to listen to my body and eat what feels right for me at this stage in my life. I think I have become insulin resistant, so I gain weight if I eat too many carbs. For me eating less carbs seems to be working for me. I think with any diet or way of eating, we need to experiment with it and see how we do with it and how we feel.

    1. Thanks Christine!
You are doing so great lately. I put this in the food post, it’s contagious! It really is inspiring when you see others doing so well. So thank you for sharing your food and progress with us! It really helps me anyway!
Yes lower carb just feels so good in general. The first part of this DASH Diet is low carb and then the book says that once you are in Phase 2 to go back to the low carb Phase 1 whenever you need to get back on track. So it’s good to see even the mainstream is catching on to the fact that we don’t need huge amounts of carbs.
Keep up the great work Christine! Happy 4th!!!

  3. my long weekend is over…three days until another vacation to a family wedding in ontario.
it is fresh everything time of year!!! no shortage of taste fresh fruit and veggies so no excuse for not eating colourful and healthy. wish there weren’t just as many ice-cream shops lol

i will copy and paste your examples and use them as a guide for a few days. i definitely have a faulty off switch so i need to check in with what my body really needs in terms of portions and balance.

    your awesome thanks all

    1. Yes!!! Jason planted a garden and I am about to have a bunch of super fresh fruit and veggies!!! So exciting!!
Lol! I felt the same in Gatlinburg. I bet there are 25 each of fudge shops, ice cream parlors, and pancake houses! Ugh!
I hope you find the examples handy and helpful! Have a great day Heather! YOU are awesome!

  4. Overwhelming, indeed ! This weekend is and has been a picnic every single day. Not always making the right choices. Always a protein source to fuel the body (burger or chicken)but then the “additions” get in the way. Munching on pretzels and a few Doritos. A cupcake or a cookie. Is it boredom or is it because it is there and I have opportunity to eat something I don’t keep in the house ?? Oh well, I deserve what I get (big butt and belly), because I AM NOT being serious about what I am eating. πŸ˜ͺ feeling down today and that is most likely due to the food choices I made yesterday. Has such an impact on everything. So, today will be a refreshing smoothie for lunch with green goodness and some vega protein powder. And, to catch up on the hours of missed sleep.

Heather, luckily, there is no ice cream in my travels, lol ! However, I think if I chose to have one ice cream instead of the cupcake, the cookie and the chips…I would be better off in the long run.

The two items I stayed far away from is the homemade “freedom” fries and the fried dough that are a tradition at the family party. I keep in mind that one will lead to ten..and a deep fried anything is NOT what I need. Why can’t I be like that with EVERYTHING !! ??

Need to regroup and I plan to do that tomorrow. As always, thanks for the info and for the much needed motivation.

Happy day all. Happy 4th πŸ’«πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

    1. Well I at least hope you had a great time at the parties Mary! Today is a new day. Time to start fresh! Your smoothie sounds perfect for getting back on track.
I felt bad after realizing that I had gained too much weight during this pregnancy but I am really excited about getting back on track and just looking forward toward my goals. We can’t do anything about the past, but we sure can about the future!
You are awesome Mary! Have a wonderfully healthy 4th!
