Day 4 – N.E.A.T

Let’s move today! N.E.A.T stands for non exercise activity thermogenesis. It’s all the things that you do to burn calories during your day that are NOT formal exercise. Washing the dishes, walking to the car, folding clothes, cleaning your house. All these things are forms of N.E.A.T. Making a point to increase your daily N.E.A.T is a super easy way to burn more calories throughout your day which in turn can help you reach your weight loss goal faster! Plus, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but sitting is the new smoking. We need to be as active as we possibly can throughout the day just to maintain our overall health!

Here are some ways to increase your daily N.E.A.T!

  • Park far away from the grocery store, mall, etc.
  • Deep clean your house
  • Place your laptop or computer on a high counter so that you are standing while on it.
  • Stand up while folding clothes
  •  When sitting for desk work or school work, get up every thirty minutes and walk around or do some squats.
  • Yard work (Bleh!)
  • Be active with your kids
  • Wash your car

Questions:

What are the ways you can increase your N.E.A.T today?

How did yesterday go? What came easy to you? What didn’t?

If you didn’t get to do something that you had on your list, that’s perfect! We will be zeroing in on those in the near future. 🙂

This has been so fun everyone! Thank you so much for participating and sharing! Tis the season to be fit.

  1. Again, at Nursery, it is difficult to stay sitting down for long so I am usually pretty active on my feet during the day! But I think I am coming down with a cold… Boo hoo!

  2. Hey Angela, I have a read a few articles about sitting is the new smoking and I did an ergonomics workshop a while back where they talked about the research on this. It’s amazing the negative impact that sitting all day can have on our health, kind of scary. Even if your workstation is set up perfectly, you should still take mini breaks throughout the day. If I am having a day where I will be at my desk most of the day, I make it a point to get up often. I go to the kitchen to make coffee or tea, then get up to go to the bathroom, then go to the kitchen to get some water, etc. If someone comes to talk to me, I stand up, that way I am face to face with the person and it’s an opportunity to get up. And whenever I can, I go for walks with my colleagues during lunch hour, I think this is a great way to boost productivity.

    1. Oh wow! I’m sure that class was so eye opening. It really is scary even when you just think about how active our ancestors had to be and how we are nowhere close simply because we don’t have to do all the things they had to. We really have to make a point to stay active! Thanks Christine!
