21 to Zip Day 1 Recap – Sunday Dinner and Acquired Tastes

Hey Yall!

Happy Monday! How was your weekend?

We had our first Sunday dinner yesterday! What a great time. The thought of Sunday dinners popped into my head last week when I realized how bad Jason and I are at letting weeks and even months pass without seeing our family and friends face to face. I figured if we had a constant like Sunday dinner that people could come to every weekend, we are sure to keep in touch!

Yesterday’s attendees were Jason’s mom, my mom, Jason’s brother Andy (who could pass for his twin), our next door neighbors Anne and Larry, and our good friends Kathleen and Daniel. Everyone brought a dish and we just hung out and laughed all afternoon. So fun. An afternoon of blessings for sure.

And to top things off, I stayed on track!

There were definitely a few temptations like squash casserole and mac n cheese. But this is just 21 days! I can have squash casserole after the wedding. I had salad topped with chicken and shrimp with Bolthouse Farms ranch yogurt dressing followed by a cup of black coffee. Probably the biggest bummer was not being able to have a glass of wine with everyone but again, wine will be there after the wedding. Probably right after I would imagine!

Breakfast was overnight oats with chocolate Vega Essentials stirred in.

I had sworn off Vega protein powder after trying the coconut almond Protein and Greens. I also gave the vanilla Protein and Greens a shot too. Yuck. But when Sarah came to visit she assured me that I would feel differently about Vega Essentials. She let me try some of hers in a smoothie and she was right! Completely different! So good. I am definitely hooked. I have already tried all three flavors (mocha, chocolate, and vanilla) and love them all. Surprisingly chocolate is my favorite. (And no I do not work or have any affiliation with Vega).

Did I ever post any pictures of when Sarah was here? Maybe I did but I can’t remember doing it so here they are, maybe again! Those of you with small children will understand how hard it is to get a picture of everyone actually sitting still and smiling….

I am still just sitting here in awe of the fact that she actually came to visit. Such an amazing time! Love you Sarah!

Lunch was another oatmeal. You know me haha. This one was another bowl of overnight oats with applesauce and dry roasted peanuts. I just fix the two bowls at night before I go to bed and walla! Quick and easy breakfast AND lunch!

I had one snack in the afternoon which was seaweed and a mult-green kombucha. I am realizing something about the healthy foods I like. I have acquired a taste for them and this is why it is a rare occasion when someone tries one of my concoctions and actually likes it too. Haha!

I realized this when drinking both the multi-green kombucha and these Daily Greens green juices I have been getting from Costco.

Yuck the first time around, but not so bad on the second!

When I first tried these, I thought they were gross. ¬†As you probably know, a lot of green juices sold in stores are loaded with sugar and are not even worth the “green”. These are not those haha. Daily Greens definitely taste “healthy”. I even wondered how I was going to finish the rest of them because you all know that when you get things from Costco it’s always in a very large quantity. Well I was determined to finish the green juices because the were not cheap and for whatever reason also kept choosing multi-green again and again when getting a kombucha! I think it’s because we have been sick every since Ryan started school and green things just seem right at the moment.

But now I have totally acquired a taste for the green drinks! I actually really enjoy them now! Isn’t that funny? Having acquired a taste for these drinks that I originally thought were gross made me think that I have probably done this with most of my food that I eat on a regular basis now. And thinking back, I remember the first time I tried plain oatmeal and thought “No way, I can’t do this”. And I used to only eat broccoli in Chinese food!

So if you have a hard time finding healthy foods that you enjoy, a lot of people recommend “Just trying it.” Well, I would say “Just try it……again. And maybe again after that!” We don’t seem to mind acquiring tastes for beer and coffee so why not acquire a taste for something really good for you! Not that coffee and beer don’t have their place ūüėČ

My Two Fav Flavors Now Come In Vegan! What Are The Odds???

So this morning I go to do my workout on Beachbody on Demand and what do I see??? Two new VEGAN Shakeology flavors. And what flavors are they??? That would be vanilla and cafe latte. What are the odds that 2 months into my vegan journey Shakeology comes out with two new vegan options that happen to be exactly MY two favorite flavors?! SO WEIRD! I’m so excited! I feel like I won something haha! Talk about a motivated Monday. Gah.

One Change Challenge!

Good morning!

I LOVE MONDAYS! I love new beginnings! Yeeeeeeeeee!

Now that I am no longer housing a small being and I am back to my blogging groove, anyone in the mood for a challenge? Last year’s real food challenge was so fun! You all eat the most exciting stuff!

One Change Challenge!

“Smile and hold up one finger.” ….. seemed like a simple request.

I thought maybe we could do a 7 day challenge where we all make one change that we have been wanting to make for a while. Just one. And make it kind of a big one. It can be anything. The reason I was thinking of this is because today marks 4 MONTHS that I have been sugarless! I tell you what, it was just ONE thing that I set out to do. Just one thing to focus on. And it made a HUGE impact on my life! Stay tuned for my next sugarless update!

So I thought it would be so fun if we all came up with just one thing we wanted to change and then totally went for it in our One Change Challenge. We could start maybe the day after the Super Bowl and go for 7 days. It will be so cool to see what everyone chooses to change and we can all be inspired by one another as well!

What do you think? I am open to suggestions.

Here are just some ideas of things you could choose for your one change…….

  • Quit junky sugar
  • Organize one area in your house and keep it organized for 7 days
  • Eat real food
  • Go vegetarian for a week
  • Go vegan for a week
  • Quit coffee for a week (Nooooooo, booooooo)
  • Get 20 minutes of exercise in for 7 days
  • Gratitude journal every morning
  • Drink your half your weight in ounces of water everyday
  • Read the Bible every morning
  • Pray or meditate at the beginning or end of the day
  • Go to bed at a decent time everyday for 7 days.

Remember, it’s just ONE thing and it’s just ONE week. This will be neat.

So often we let our fears hold us back when it comes to our health even though staying right where we are is actually worse than what we are afraid of.

Finding yourself paralyzed by fear? Here are a few of the common fears that get in the way of our goals. And here is a little game I made up called Maybe It Will, Maybe It Won’t¬†to point out the possible results of our choices.

Maybe you will find this post helpful…. but then maybe you won’t. Haha!

FEAR: I Won’t Be Able To Stick To A Healthy Eating Meal Plan
Maybe It Will…..¬†make you miserable because you miss your old way of eating. Maybe you will hate it so much you will give in and feel like a failure and end up feeling worse than you already do.
Maybe It Won’t…..¬†be so bad. Maybe you will enjoy the way you feel from living a healthy lifestyle so much that you won’t even want to eat the way you used to anymore. Maybe you will actually like¬†healthy food. Maybe it will start with eating less sugar and you will end up just like one of those beautiful, fit people you see on Health Magazine¬†while waiting in line at the grocery store.
Certainly: If you don’t try a healthy eating meal plan, you will never know if you like it or not, if you can stick to it or not, and you will certainly stay the way you are.

FEAR: I Have Already Failed MANY Times At Trying To Eat A Healthy Diet, I Will Just Fail Again.
Maybe It Will…..
make things worse to try again. Maybe you will not be able to do it, again, and only feel worse about yourself.
Maybe It Won’t….. be the same outcome this time. Maybe, if you come at it with a clean slate, a brand new mindset, you can forget every single thing that you have ever done wrong in the past and start again. Maybe this can be the start of something fantastic.
Certainly: If you believe you can’t, you are right.

FEAR: I Will Not Be Able To Keep Up With A Exercise Program
Maybe It Will…..
be to hard. Maybe it will hurt. Maybe you won’t be able to keep up with everyone else in the class. Maybe you will feel ashamed. Maybe you will feel discouraged. Maybe you will feel uncomfortable. Maybe you will just give up because you feel ashamed and discouraged and uncomfortable.
Maybe It Won’t…..¬†be so bad that it’s hard. Maybe it won’t be so bad that it hurts. Maybe when you can’t keep up with everyone else, it will fuel a fire that you didn’t know was inside you. Maybe you will feel proud. Maybe you will feel encouraged because your body did something you didn’t think it could…..what else can it do? Maybe it will feel good to feel uncomfortable for a bit…… maybe you will feel alive!
Certainly:¬†If you don’t give it a shot, you will stay just as you are right now.

FEAR: People Will Think I Am Stupid
Maybe It Will…..
be that you are laughed at. People will wonder why you are even trying. People will laugh behind your back because you are overweight and trying to get in shape. Maybe they will think you are stupid for daring to step into a gym looking the way you do. Maybe they will even say something to you. Maybe your feelings will be hurt.
Maybe It Won’t….. be any of your business what they say behind your back.¬†Maybe¬†you will¬†not care what they think because you are too focused. Maybe you will do what is good for you despite what people think or say. Maybe you will put one foot in front of the other and keep your eye on your goal. Maybe you will gain respect for yourself. Maybe you will find out that’s all the respect you needed in the first place.
Certainly: You are the result of your thoughts.

Just some thoughts.

12 Days of Fitness Day 9 – Set Up For Success

Now that we have devised our fail proof plan, let’s make it as easy as possible to execute! Today, let’s set up for success.

Day 9 – Set Up For Success!

What things could you do today to make achieving your goals tomorrow almost effortless? Maybe grocery shopping and meal prepping? Setting out your exercise clothes? Packing a gym bag? If you are planning on working out in the evening, maybe ask a friend to go with you so that you are more likely to actually do it. Evening workouts tend to be more challenging because you are tired from the day or unexpected things come up that get in the way. Scheduling it like an appointment and taking it just as seriously helps make sure that you meet your goal.

One way that I am setting up for success to day is doing a food prep.

I am a stay at home mom (are there supposed to be dashes? Stay-at-home?) so I don’t really have to do a meal¬†prep but I do find that a food prep is extremely helpful. On Sunday, I will go ahead and cook a bunch of lean proteins and veggies so that they are ready for me to just heat and eat throughout the week! I also like to have hard boiled eggs all peeled and ready to go. There is a huge difference in the amount of convenience between an unpeeled hard boiled egg and a peeled one haha.

If you work outside of the home though, a meal prep is a fabulous way to stay on track all week! I would even go on to say that it is a must.¬†A meal prep is where you cook and prepare the actual meals that you will be eating for the week ahead. So you would make all the food for all of your lunches for the week, put the whole meal into containers, and then just grab them and go! I will do a post on how to do a food prep in the near future. One thing that is often not thought about when prepping food for the week is the actual amount of food you need to make. If you are prepping food for 4-5 days, that’s a lot of food and that means the food prep will probably take a few hours to do. But if spending a few hours in the kitchen one day means that you are completely prepared to smash your diet goals all week long…… no brainer in my opinion.

Another thing that I have done for years to set up for success is writing a “to do” list the night before. I cannot tell you the amount of stress this relieves! I get so much more done when the things I want to do are written down for me to see. Plus, it frees up so much mental space because you don’t have to just remember everything. I write the list at night and keep it next to where I sleep. ¬†That way if I think of something that needs to be done I can write it down. Falling asleep is so much easier when you don’t have the worry of possibly forgetting something.

This two things have proved so helpful for me!
